  Passage 1

I am an invisible man. No, I am not a spook like those who haunted EdgarAllan Poe; nor am I one of your Hollywood movie ectoplasms. I am a man ofsubstance of flesh and bone, fiber and liquids— and I might even said to possessa mind. I am invisible; understand, simply because people refuse to see me. Likethe bodiless heads you see sometimes in circus sideshows, it is as though I havebeen surrounded by hard, distorting glass. When they approach me they see onlymy surroundings, themselves, or figments of their imagination— indeed, everything and anything except me.

Nor is my invisibility exactly a matter of a bio-chemical accident to myepidermis. That invisibility to which I refer occurs because of a peculiardisposition of the eyes of those with whom I come in contact. A matter of theconstruction of their inner eyes, those eyes with which they look through theirphysical eyes upon reality. I am not complaining, nor am I protesting either. Itis sometimes advantageous to be unseen, although it is most often rather wearingon the nerves. Then too, you’re constantly being bumped against by those of poorvision. Or again, you often doubt of you really exist. You wonder whether youaren’t simply a phantom in other people’s minds. Say, a figure in a nightmarewhich the sleeper tried with all his strength to destroy. It’s when you feellike this that, out of resentment, you begin to bump people back. And, let meconfess, you feel that way most of the time. You ache with need to convinceyourself that you do exist in the real world, that you’re part of all the soundand anguish, and you strike out with your fists, you curse and swear to makethem recognize you. And, alas, it’s seldom successful. (309 words)

 Passage 2

Your thoughts can be your best friend and worst enemy. Have you evernoticed that if you find yourself

thinking even a single negative thought, itinevitably spirals out of control until you have a nasty chorus of MentalMonsters taking over your brain? If you find yourself thinking, “I feel solonely right now,” it’s easy to keep that thought process going in the wrongdirection until thoughts like, “I will always be alone,” or “no one will everlove me,” creep up on you.

Be aware of what you’re thinking about and stop your negative thoughtsbefore they grow into Mental Monsters that are much harder to control. If youfind yourself stressing out, do something that relaxes you. Light some candlesor incense, take a nice hot bubble bath, perform some gentle yoga poses, or playsoothing music.

Being aware of world events is totally okay, but becoming addicted to thenews is a sure-fire way to sink your mood. Limit your news consumption to asmall handful of articles per day because there is no reason to bury yourself indepressing news stories for hours on end.

Watching television is fine in moderation, but spending all of your freehours in front of the tube wHI do nothing to help you grow or feel better. Reada classic novel you adored in high school, go to a local community theater toenjoy a racy comedy or Shakespearean tragedy, and exercise at least every otherday to keep your mind and body at the top of their game. Passage 3

 Passage 4
